In this Funding page of Aided Right, we delve into the critical importance of financial support in our quest for justice. Here, we explore how funding is instrumental in shining a light on miscarriages of justice, advocating for change, and supporting victims of court exploitation. From the highly publicised Post Office scandal to the lesser-known struggles within the Court of Protection, we uncover the urgent need for resources to reveal the truth, hold perpetrators accountable, and ensure justice wins.
The Post Office scandal, a national shock, draws attention to similar concerns encountered by victims of the Court of Protection, as highlighted by our founder’s firsthand experience. This court, responsible for protecting vulnerable individuals, faces criticism for its opaque practices and undue influence, which even spill over into rulings in the Crown Court. To address these systemic failures, a Statutory Public Inquiry is imperative. Such an inquiry would untangle the complexities surrounding these issues and amplify the voices of those who have been unjustly marginalised. We can take significant strides toward achieving justice and accountability by allocating sufficient funding to support this endeavour.
At Aided Right, we recognise the devastating impact of financial exploitation on victims. Many individuals, already vulnerable and marginalised, find themselves trapped in a cycle of manipulation and deceit orchestrated by those in positions of power. From limiting access to finances to coercing victims into debt, court arranged perpetrators also wield financial control to maintain dominance.
We work to secure funding for comprehensive support services through our advocacy and collaborative partnerships. Legal representation, psychological counselling, and practical assistance to help victims navigate complex legal processes and seek justice.
The Post Office scandal shook the nation and exposed grave flaws within our justice system. Beginning in 2009 with, revelations from Computer Weekly, it revealed widespread miscarriages of justice endured by postmasters nationwide. These individuals, entrusted with running local post offices, were wrongly accused, prosecuted, and even imprisoned due to errors in the Horizon computer system. Over 900 sub-postmasters were affected, with the Post Office and other bodies like the Crown Prosecution Service bringing 283 cases to court between 1999 and 2015. Many faced imprisonment and financial ruin.
In 2017, 555 sub-postmasters took legal action, resulting in a £58m compensation agreement in 2019, though legal fees consumed much of the payout. Shockingly, despite knowing their defence was flawed, the Post Office spent £100m defending against the claims. By mid-January 2024, only 95 convictions had been overturned, prompting the Criminal Cases Review Commission to label it the most widespread miscarriage of justice. This scandal underscored the critical need for funding to support victims and uncover systemic flaws within our legal system.
Additionally, the scandal prompted a significant step forward in pursuing truth and accountability, with the UK government launching an independent inquiry in 2020. Prompted by damning Court of Appeal rulings deeming postmaster prosecutions unsafe, this inquiry aims to shed light on the injustices suffered by innocent victims. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police is investigating the Post Office for potential fraud offences, signalling a commitment to holding perpetrators accountable and fixing public trust in our institutions.
Funding is not just about financial resources—it’s about empowering change. By investing in initiatives that expose systemic flaws, advocate for legislative reform, and provide support to victims, we can pave the way for a fairer and trustworthy legal system. Through public awareness campaigns, fundraising efforts, and strategic collaborations, we aim to mobilise resources and empower individuals to support and join us in our mission to end court exploitation.
Victims often find themselves navigating complex legal processes without adequate representation. Funding will enable us to provide victims access to experienced legal professionals who can advocate on their behalf, ensuring their rights are protected, and their voices are heard in court.
Court exploitation can have devastating effects on victims’ mental health and well-being. With funding, we can offer victims access to psychological counselling and support services to help them cope with trauma, anxiety, and other emotional challenges stemming from their experiences.
Many victims face practical challenges, such as financial hardship, housing instability, and employment issues, as a result of court exploitation. By allocating resources, we can provide helpful assistance, such as emergency financial aid, housing support, and job placement services, to help victims rebuild their lives and regain independence.
Funding will allow us to expand our advocacy efforts and reach a wider audience, raising awareness about court exploitation and mobilising support for systemic change. Through public awareness campaigns, educational workshops, and community outreach initiatives, we can empower victims to speak out, access resources, and demand accountability from those responsible.
Victims often struggle to access essential resources and information to navigate the legal system and seek redress. We can develop and maintain comprehensive resource centres with funding, providing victims easy access to legal guides, informational materials, support networks, and referrals to trusted service providers.
Overall, funding plays a crucial role in providing victims of court exploitation with the support, resources, and empowerment they need to heal, rebuild their lives, and advocate for justice. Through strategic resource allocation and collaborative partnerships, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by court exploitation. Share, support, and join us in our mission to secure justice and support for victims—your contribution can make a real difference in someone’s life.

Our mission is to expose and challenge the abuses of power within the legal profession and support those who have been unjustly treated or abused by misused power.
